Since 2016, the New England Impact Investing Initiative has been organising programs and events to empower leaders of impact both locally and internationally. Here are some programs that we have organised, along with the individuals who have progressed through them.

The Impact Investing Fellowship

The Fellowship aims to democratize access to impact investing & sustainable finance education to diversify & empower the next generation of impact professionals. Fellows are introduced to the sector’s themes, approaches, and players through curated educational sessions, workshops, and small-group discussions. Fellows gain an understanding of the financial system, their relationship to money, and several entrance points into the world of impact investing. We foster opportunities for professionals, students, investors, and entrepreneurs to advance their careers & gain insights from a diverse, global class of Fellows.

Fellows who successfully completed our program actively participated in our guided, peer-based immersion over the past 4 months, with more than 40 hours of an intense learning journey from leaders in the field. The program is an exploration of sustainable finance products & how to fund impact investing. Fellows learned practical use of tools for impact creation & got access to a global network of practitioners, researchers, and leaders in the space.

Fellows had sessions that would explore all the different levels of impact investing. Along the way, Fellows could organize topics specific to their career interests. The Peer Projects are one way the program allows Fellows to explore personal questions and curiosities in the space. This cohort of Fellows organized around different impact projects and research questions, they formed small groups to work on. Here were the different groups that were formed.

During the month of November, we gave the Fellows the opportunity to take over the program and focus on the topics Fellows really want to dive into! This is to support them in their work and to build connections for them in the space. These 14 additional Skill Sessions for November were added to the program, and the Fellows organized and hosted the conversations. Check them out below!

Also, the Fellows participated in Peer Project April, where the Fellows have 4 weeks to organize in small group, to either realizing a change project of your choice or embark on a peer learning deep dive, zooming in on a particular topic within the field. It’s the space we’ve designed for the Fellows to develop their skills, explore career pathways, and learn in collaboration with your peers. Fellows organized around these different ideas:

  • Business Angels & Mety Ventures accelerator program, where the group developed the idea of creating a program for entrepreneurs looking for impact investing for their local impact projects

  • Career Transitions - project to understand and map the employer types, industry roles, examples from the space, and resources available to make that job switch to impact investing

  • Fund Reporting - review of three crucial impact reporting frameworks and the process behind them: Impact Frontiers, Impact Principles, and the Principles of Responsible Investing

  • Carbon Capture ESG project, where the team explored the latest news and science behind the developing technologies

  • Unlocking Capital - a research project to understand, map, and categorize different impact investing funders for both entrepreneurs and investors to know who is working in the ecosystem

  • Youth Network - a discussion group that explored how to empower younger people before they enter the workforce to explore sustainable finance and impact investing

The 2021 Fellowship built on the success of our 2020 Pilot Program and was broken into two parts. During Part I, Fellows participated in ten trainings with a special focus on developing business ideas, understanding impact investing trends, and breaking into the space with social and career advice. Fellows were given an Impact Entrepreneurship membership, could attend SOCAP 2021, and were provided with a copy of the Boston Impact Initiative’s Integrated Capital Card Game, which we used in real-life case studies on building an impact investing deal. Fellows were also allowed to help co-create the program by suggesting educational topics of interest to them, and they assisted in sourcing potential speakers and firms to participate.

During Part II, Fellows chose to join one of three corporate partners for an extended learning journey. Each learning journey was developed in collaboration with the corporate partner and explored their approach to impact investing and how they manage their operations. Team members at these corporate partners provided monthly mentoring & educational sessions. We also hosted additional social events with the whole class to share learnings and reflect on each other's experiences, thereby supporting everyone’s professional journey more effectively.

A big thank you to these corporate partners for developing this unique opportunity:

  • Eventide Asset Management

  • Morgan Lewis Law Firm

  • Trillium Asset Management
